Perhaps peace can only exist in our imagination and even then it's faint.
My friend Reagan used to say that his feelings teeter between "humanity is good" and "humanity is evil." He would see me put my purse in a conspicuous place on my chair at a restaurant and challenge me, "You're in 'humanity is good' today."
Honestly, normally I embrace both statements about us so readily without fear of contradiction and without confusion.

Reagan, if you're reading this, today I hold on tight to my purse.
And I scream this song as a prayer.
